Fourth Commandment

Remember the Sabbath

The command to observe a weekly rest on the Sabbath day imitates the life of God, who rested on the seventh day of creation. The Sabbath resists wearying, dehumanizing labor in service to human masters by offering a regular rhythm of rest.

Reflect

How does the Bible’s presentation of Yahweh as a God who rests affect how you see God? How might God’s call to rest from labor and give rest to others fit with a regular rhythm of life in our modern world?

What is the story we tell when we choose to stop working and rest for a whole day every week?
